In 1987, Brother James F. Gates from Nepal Jesuit Society established the Social Work Institute (SWI). The institute was primarily involved in training people to work in programs on drug rehabilitation, counselling and therapy for the troubled, on child abuse and neglect, projectoriented community development theories and income generation and skills development programs.
SWI gradually shifted its approach towards preparation of hands-on social workers and general human resource development in the field of social work by conducting long and short-term training and workshops for various target groups. In addition, SWI also started to implement small grassroots-level community development programs through its graduates and in partnership with community-based organisations.

Our mission is to empower people that are disadvantaged due to cast, gender, occupation or the place they live. We support them in their strive for a self-determined, active and dignified live.

Programs:
• Training Program: SWI implements the accredited and non-accredited training program. Diploma in Social Work is 9 monthly social work training program. It was implemented from the year 1987.
• Child Protection Worker training: This training is also targetting to you rural youts and it is focused on child protection. It is a 6-month training program ( 3 months inhouse training and 3 months internship).
• Tailor-made training: SWI also implements the training on request. It mainly implements the project cycle management, cooperative management, financial management, Food sovereignty, agroecology etc. Those trainings are designed as per the request from the NGOs/CBOS. SWI also facilitates child safeguarding training programs.
• Training Center: SWI has its own training facilities with 3 training halls ( each training hall occupies up to 40 participants). It has also a residential facility. It can be accommodated up to 46 participants. SWI provides its training center to other organizations.
• Community development Project: SWI implements the community development project in partnering with its alumni and community-based organizations. The project mainly focuses on sustainable livelihood through agro ecology. Nowadays it is focusing on young farmers, women farmers, and children.
• Network: SWI also promote networks with a like-minded organization. It has got a network of partner organizations. Every once a year it also conducts local seed exchange activity in collaboration with the local government and partner organizations. SWI has also networked among its alumni and ex-project partners.
• SIW is also interested to participate in different networks. Mainly it is participate in the DRR network, promotion of agro-ecology, promoting of the rights of small farm holders, children's environment rights etc.
