About us

Green Cover Initiative (GCI) is a National NGO: non-profit making, non-governmental organization with its head office in Kigali city (Gasabo District). It operates in Rulindo and Bugesera Districts of Rwanda. GCI is serving small farmers, especially women and youth cooperatives.
GCI was established in June 2009 and was legally recognized and registered by RGB (Rwanda Governance Board) as National NGO under registration number 159/NGO/RGB in 2012. GCI has received civil personality in 2014 under registration number No: 113/2014.

GCI’s mission is to contribute to the socio-economic development of Rwandan communities by improving livelihood of vulnerable people through empowerment of rural communities for sustainable development.

GCI’s intervention domains:

• Climate change adaptation;

• Health
• Good governance,

Objectives of the Organization:
• Promotion of environmental education among rural community;
• Promotion of income generating activities for vulnerable groups;
• Promotion of citizen engagement in policy formulation;
• Promotion of commercial integrated agriculture;
• Protection of natural resources and promote agricultural techniques which are environmental friendly;
• Promotion of education of people on hygiene, sanitation and family planning;
• Promotion of men’s engagement in fighting GBV and HIV/AIDS;
• Promotion of good governance.

Activities:
Soil and Water Management
• Terracing: GCI Rwanda uses and promotes terracing as best management practice for controlling erosion and protecting water quality.
• Irrigation: The project intends to build the capacity of local communities on Drip irrigation system for demonstration on water use efficiency in semi-arid area.
