Sobre nosotros

The Umckaloabo Trust has given itself the task of enabling children and young people in southern Africa to determine their own lives.

The trust is supported by the business group of Dr. Willmar Schwabe, which specialises in the development of high quality herbal medicines. This family business has been active in the most varied social projects in South Africa for many years. The Trust has created a platform to build up this work even further.

By our work we want to produce long term benefits. It is our aim to give South African children and young people a foothold and the preconditions for a healthy life. In order to help them to help themselves, we emphasise
• passing on knowledge and skills
• giving the motivation to take responsibility for oneself and others,
Because in South Africa, only well educated, self confident, active adolescents have a chance of avoiding suffering and a lack of prospects.

The Umckaloabo Trust works on its projects in collaboration with other competent partners. These know the local structures, have regional networks, where communication is difficult, and are highly motivated to help successfully. Thus we ensure that the projects are not just a flash in the pan and that the support really reaches the people who need it.

Projects:
• Nelspruit Scout Training Centre – financing the building of a new Centre in the South African province of Mpumalanga. The Training Centre consists of a main function room, classrooms, dormitories, a kitchen and offices. It will provide a meeting place for many children and young people, where they will develop their abilities and will learn how to pass their knowledge on to other people.
• Mantsase Children's Home – a refuge for orphans: the Umckaloabo Trust subsidises this orphanage, offering the children not only board and lodging but also a stable social environment. .
• Alice Tree Planting Station: primary school children plant fruit trees. This action conveys to the children the idea of responsibility and initiative as regards nutrition and a sustainable approach to nature.
• Job training for school dropouts – prospects for young people: : the Salesian Don Boscos decided to give young people future prospects and to provide training courses, giving them a way into employment in small companies. The course takes place after completing an orientation week. The Umckaloabo Trust supports young people by paying their course fees. In addition, we subsidise supplies such as timber, metal, stone, cement and electrical goods.
