The association "Fishing Net of Hope" is an educational project for women and children in Gambia, West Africa.
The idea for the project came about in 2007 during the first visit of the initiator Dr. Gisela Schwarz in The Gambia. Supported by the desire for education and development of the local women, the association "Fischernetz der Hoffnung" Fishing Net of Hope) was founded in Graz, Austria, in 2008.

The association was founded with the knowledge that educational opportunities for women and children have a major impact on the positive development of society and that education helps to break the cycle of poverty. With the desire to change something for the future of women and children, we all got to work - here in Graz as well as in Gambia, 4000 km away as the crow flies. Our school project is located in Katchang - a rural community with 1,600 inhabitants - about 200 km (or about 5 hours by car) east of Banjul on the north bank of the Gambia River.

With the support of the cooperation partner "FairStyria" we were able to build a school building and a well. The well irrigates our school garden in which we grow various plants. We are also now planning a tree planting project on our school grounds.
In the meantime, we have founded a kindergarten (now consisting of two groups), which is looked after by a team of teachers and a team of cooks. We are currently also supporting a women's team that decided to produce soaps during the Corona pandemic. With the opening of a sales stand, the women want to take care of the children and actively contribute to the family income.

Dr. Gisela Schwarz is the initiator and chairwoman of the board and Johanna Schönthaler is the PR manager of the association Fischernetz der Hoffnung.

For other net participants we can offer an expert guidance through trained staff, give an expert opinion, procure expert information and establish new contacts in the field of our work.
