Buliisa Initiative for Rural Development Organization (BIRUDO) was founded in 2006 by a group of Ugandan youths after realizing a gap in capacity building in order to fight poverty among the local rural and urban communities. BIRUDO registered under registration number 11502 and S.5914/11655 as a Local Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) with The National Board for Non-Governmental Organisations Ministry of Internal Affair, Republic of Uganda. BIRUDO operates in Albertine region of Uganda, with its headquarters in Buliisa Town Council on Paraa Road, opposite Stanbic Bank Buliisa Branch.

To improve the quality of life of the local communities through information sharing, sensitization, advocacy and networking for sustainable development.

Strategic objectives

What we do
• Advocacy: BIRUDO’s advocacy programs encourage critical thinking by the local communities to assume the responsibilities of oil justice, land rights, environmental issues, food security, economic empowerment and the fight against HIV/AIDSBIRUDO also holds community workshops to teach local people about establishing communal land associations, land rights, conserving their natural resources and achieving food security. so as promote meaningful and active engagement by local people in the pursuit of justice.
• Environment: BIRUDO is currently raising and distributing tree seedlings to the local community of Buliisa District to demonstrate the importance of planting trees and environmental conservation. As a result of the environmental sensitization program and consultative meetings with the local community and other stakeholders, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Buliisa Town Council and BIRUDO to facilitate tree planting activity and ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of the tree planting project and environmental conservation.
• Agriculture: BIRUDO identified farmer groups, established their status and trained 172 farmer groups in Buliisa District in areas of monitoring and evaluation, leadership roles and skills, record keeping and management, financial management, group constitution making, conflict resolution and gender issues; BIRUDO also provided farmers of Buliisa District with such agricultural technologies as banana suckers, bee keeping and goat rearing; BIRUDO, in partnership with International Labour Organization (under Youth Entrepreneurship Facility), is currently implementing the Honey Production for Young Women Empowerment Project in Buliisa District aiming at empowering young women bee keepers in order for them to play a bigger role in the honey production and value addition chain, marketing and market linkage and be transformed from local honey producers to modern honey producers.
• Education: The obligation to pursue justice for girl child, orphans and vulnerable children’s (OVC) education and capacity building of school management committees is at the heart of BIRUDO.
• HIV/AIDS: Project Scaling Up HIV Preventions among Most at Risk Populations (MARPS) in Urban and Peri-Urban Areas in Uganda with following objectives: To strengthen urban local government systems and structures to effectively coordinate and advocate for HIV/AIDS prevention services targeting MARPS; To increase access and utilization of comprehensive HIV prevention services by 113,750 MARPS for HIV prevention; To strengthen the technical and institutional capacity of 10 Civil Society Funds funded by Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to provide quality HIV/AIDS and OVC services; To establish a functional project monitoring and evaluation system at AMICAALL and its implementing partners.
