Qui sommes-nous

Smile Community Centre was registered in the year 2009. Motivated by her need to serve God through community work after recovery a near death experience,Margret Nekesa Khaemba, a mother of three, saw the need in the society for a safe haven where women and children in informal settlements could gain support, training and counseling to help them make a better life for themselves.

Our Mission
To promote self-reliance, education and well being of marginalized children, women and youth in the informal settlements.

Our vision
To see a community free of illiteracy, lack of sustainable income and poor health.

Programs:
• Income Generating Activities: The income generating program led by Margret Nekesa trains youth and women on income generating activities like artwork, mainly ribbons, bangles, necklaces, dog collars, waist lines and making detergents.
• Education: Smile community center hosts and educates children at the children rescue center that caters to the needy vulnerable children who are mostly orphaned by HIV/AIDS and domestic violence. Currently the centre educated 4 children in secondary school and 5 children in primary school. They study using kerosene lamps at night. We hope to acquire a better place with electricity.
• HIV&AIDS Support: Smile Community Center Advocates for equal rights of PLHIV by providing counseling, referrals and education. Group therapies are held for the special needs of all members in the community to enhance psychological care .The target groups are abused women and children, Drug addicts, Ex juvenile delinquents, Youth in general and PLHIV(People living with HIV).Our long term plan is to hold regular group therapies and HIV/AIDS education to youth, women and men. Currently, group therapies are held once in a month due to lack of funding.
• Sports & Co-Curricular activities: The sports and co-curricular activities are part of the routine programs at the children’s center where the young stars participate in football, basketball, arts and music. We face a challenge of lack of a play field so the sports are organized once in a while away from the center, which involves transportation cost and facilities.
• Feeding Program: The feeding program is carried once in a while for the community members mainly women and children who cannot afford a meal. They are given a meal to eat and cereals or floor to keep them moving on. In future we are looking forward to expand the activities of smile community centre to other neighboring areas like sabasaba, kayole one and matopeni.
• Smile community children home, located in the informal settlements of Kayole-Soweto in the eastlands of Nairobi has become a safe haven for vulnerable children in the informal settlements, who are mostly left alone orphaned by HIV & AIDS. The center runs with support of well-wishers. It started in the house of Margret and later in rooms made of iron sheets hosting 9 children and 9 other children referred to other homes due to lack of enough space and facilities.
