Über uns

Shrestha is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improve the life of underprivileged, slum and orphan children in Jaipur (India). Shrestha works to break the cycle of poverty that diminishes these children’s life chances.

Vision
• To provide formal & informal education to underprivileged children.
• To create interest in children about going to school by implementing recreational methodologies & informal ways of education.
• To provide Psycho-Socio counseling to children.
• To provide them Health & Hygiene educations.
• To reunite them with their families and communities.
• To provide them vocational training in various trades.

Without a good education, their economic prospects will be as limited as those of their parents, sentencing them and their future children to a similar life of hardship.
Shrestha is also about helping keep families together, because it’s not uncommon for slum children to run away – sometimes because of problems created by their own parents and sometimes in pursuit of their dreams.

Our programs:
• Teaching and Day Care Program: At the Shrestha , we teach the children Hindi, English, maths and computing, in a friendly and supportive atmosphere, while also assisting in their moral development. We provide vocational training so that the children can learn a range of crafts, from jewellery making and art through to henna tattooing and tailoring clothes and bags. We also put a strong focus on fun and social skills at the Shrestha . We celebrate festivals and birthdays with the children, which gives them a lot of happiness, and each school day ends with a session of sports and games, to make sure they always leave with a smile.
• Lunch Program: We start a Lunch program for helping underprivileged children by providing them with a healthy, balanced meal that they would otherwise have to work for. The meal is an incentive for them to continue their education. It helps reduce the dropout rate to an enormous extent and increases classroom attendance.
• Life Skill, Health and Hygiene Project: We organized Health and Hygiene awareness workshop for the children as well as their families and communities to educate them about health and hygiene. Through these programs we put our effort to realize them that health and hygiene is the most significant factor for their impoverish condition. Hence we imparted education on substance use, and sexual and reproductive health including HIV/AIDS and STDs, Health & Hygiene by organizing workshops, group discussion & demonstration. Educating street children involves helping them acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes in specific areas of need. Life skills or psychosocial skills include decision making and problem solving, creative thinking and critical thinking, communication and interpersonal skills, self-awareness and empathy, and coping with emotion and stress. Demonstration, Feedback and practice. Group discussion, role-play, and games are key activities that helped in developing basic psychosocial skills.
