OzHarvest is a non-denominational charity that rescues excess food which would otherwise be discarded. OzHarvest was founded in Sydney, in November 2004.
OzHarvest collects excess food from function centres, caterers, corporate offices, restaurants, cafes and tourist operators and provides that food to charities. This excess food is distributed to charities supporting the vulnerable in Sydney, Newcastle, Adelaide and Brisbane. These charities feed those who are disadvantaged or at risk, including homeless persons, youth at risk, single parents with no support, marginalised indigenous men, women and children, refugees, those recovering from addictions, women escaping domestic violence and those with a mental illness and nowhere else to go.
OzHarvest is a simple, effective service and is provided free to both food donor and recipient. The food is picked up and delivered the same day using refrigerated vans with a changing daily schedule.
The work we do has a dual impact:
• By supplementing the nutritional wellbeing, dignity and health of at risk communities OzHarvest enables organisations to reduce their food budget and redirect their funding to education and rehabilitation.
• By ensuring that good food is being eaten rather than going to landfill OzHarvest is helping the environment by ensuring tons of carbon emissions do not pollute the atmosphere.
NEST – Nutrition Education and Sustenance Training: The NEST provides nutrition education and training for individuals who are involved in preparing meals for Australians in need. The course is designed to up skill the residents, chefs, cooks, kitchen hands and volunteers working in charitable agencies that provide meals to the homeless and disadvantaged.
