About us

The Kuratorium Tuberculosis in the World has been a non profit-making organisation (NGO) since 1979. Its aim is to tackle the problem of tuberculosis in developing countries. It supports and runs tuberculosis health care clinics, high security laboratories and research projects for the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis; the epidemic which has the highest number of fatalities every year in developing countries.
Our project leaders, who spend about two weeks every year on the spot, on training courses, monitoring and motivation tasks, are accepted authorites from German lung clinics and health departments.
The Medical Head of the WHO Supranational Reference Laboratory for Tuberculosis, with headquarters in Gauting, is the honorary President of the organisation.

Tasks and activities
It is almost exclusively people working in an honorary capacity who help us to achieve our aims. The tasks are clearly defined, the activities following the lines laid down in our constitution.
• Planning, development, expert supervision of and financial support for tuberculosis facilities, together with local partners, e.g. laboratories or health care clinics conforming to international standards, making allowances for particular local conditions.
• Informing people about prevention and control of tuberculosis, with lectures and scientific presentations
• Active participation in large international health organisations such as WHO (The World Health Organisation) and IUATLD (International Union Against Tuberkulosis and Lung Disease).
•Transferring know-how by training local workers. We are absolutely convinced that this is the best way to help people to help themselves. .
• Advising on the planning and building of tuberculosis facilities by other NGOs.
• Cooperation with those partner organisations in the supported countries which have similar aims, especially as far as political implementation is concerned.

Projects:
• Bolivia: Two TB treatment centres have been set up in Santa Cruz since 1983, financed by donations to the Kuratorium and BMZ funds. Each facility is equipped with a bacteriological laboratory and examination rooms for doctors and pharmacists. Diagnosis and therapy is solely in the hands of local specialists.
• Nepal: a laboratory for the diagnosis of tuberculosis and a health care clinic for TB patients have been built in Kathmandu since 1986. In addition we supervise district projects and take part in international studies.
• Ukraine: a national reference laboratory for diagnosing tuberculosis has been built in Kiev, and was presented to the Ukraine Ministry of Health by the Bavarian Minister of State in the year 2000. The Kuratorium was in charge of this project (supervision, quality control, and staff training) and oversaw the coordination of all the parties involved.
• Stavropol Russla: setting up a laboratory in the central TB Hospital in Stavropol, which has since been handed over to the Gorbachov Trust, thus enabling long-term tuberculosis control, including multi-resistant cases.

Constanze Höpner and Helga Lindau work in the administrative department of the Kuratorium Tuberculosis in the World.

On request we can offer other net participants advice, give a presentation and provide up to date information and contacts in the field of our work.
