About us

Founded in 1992, Ecocity Builders is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reshaping cities for the long-term health of human and natural systems.

We develop and implement policy, design and educational tools and strategies to build thriving urban centers based on “access by proximity” and to reverse patterns of sprawl and excessive consumption.

Ecocity Builders and associates’ definition of “ecocity” is conditional upon a healthy relationship of the city’s parts and functions, similar to the relationship of organs in living complex organism. We are concerned with city design, planning, building, and operations in an integral way and in relation to the surrounding environment and natural resources of the region, utilizing organic, ecological and whole-systems lessons to actually reverse the negative impacts of climate change, species extinction and the destruction of the biosphere.

Activities:
• Demonstration Projects in the San Francisco Bay Area: Demonstration projects are effective mechanisms for forging partnerships between public, private and especially community sectors, developing new ways of working together, and learning by doing.
• Education: Educational Offerings like: Books and Publications; Speakers Bureau; Classes and Workshops; Ecocities for Kids; Design Charrettes. • Policy Development and Advocacy: Task Forces, Committees like Oil Independent Oakland by 2020 Task Force; Policies, Campaigns like Oil Independent Oakland Action Plan, Ecocity” Transfer of Development Rights or Berkeley Solar Greenhouse Ordinance.
• Consulting: We provide our clients with exclusive consulting on ecologically sensitive building and development projects like Ecocity Mapping for Urban Villages.
• International Ecocity Conference Series: Addresses the way humanity builds its home — its cities, towns and villages. ( for example 2011 Montreal, Canada; 2009 Istanbul, Turkey)
• The International Ecocity Framework and Standards: Provide both the vision for an ecologically restorative human presence on earth as well as a practical methodology for assessing and guiding the achievement of such vision through the lens of the ecocity.
