African Child in Need (ACIN) – Uganda was founded by Sarah Bast and Carolin Leonhart after a trip to Africa. It has been registered as a non-profit organisation since July 2010.

Our aims:
• Offering street children a home
• enabling access to education
• individual care and supervision
• teaching appropriate social behaviour and how to deal with conflicts
• Helping people to help themselves
• Developing and creating realistic future prospects
• Education and prevention (also regarding HIV)
• Building up volunteer work schemes and supervising them.

Al the organising work is done on a voluntary basis. A member travels to Kampala at least once a year to check on the work being done on the spot and to solve any problems that have arisen. We are in frequent telephone contact with the project leader Milton Opoya and with the children and young people. In addition, our organisation supervises the volunteers who have come for one year with “Weltwärts“, the volunteer service run by the Ministry of Cooperation and Development (BMZ) as well as other volunteer helpers who support the project on the spot.

Projects:
• African Child in Need (ACIN): Street children project in Kampala – this offers street children a home in a family, education and future prospects.
• African Child Academy (ACA) in Nangalama, in the Bugiri district, 180 km from Kampala.

Future plans:
• Opening a second house for street children in Kampala.
• Opening a vocational training centre for girls in rural districts.

Sarah Bast is the president of African Child in Need Uganda.

On request we can offer other net participants advice, give a presentation, and provide up-to-date information and contacts in the field of our work.
