The Capoeira Alafia Society sponsors, ideologically and financially, initiatives and projects which convey peace and non-violence by means of the Afro-Brazilian martial art and culture “Capoeira”, especially in Jamaica.
Our particular concern lies in supporting projects for socially disadvantaged children and young people in Jamaica's capital, Kingston.
The initiatives we support use Capoeira as anti-violence training, which, along with psychological support, teaches alternatives to violent behaviour, self-confidence and respect. New, positive life prospects are developed for the often traumatised children and young people growing up in a country with one of the highest murder rates in the world. The training gives them a way of letting off pent up anger and teaches social group behaviour, which can often be carried over to family and friends.
This involves running teaching courses, having talks and regular training lessons for socially disadvantaged children and young people, as well as their instruction within the framework of an anti-violence concept.
To this end, we supply the relevant institutions with material resources and tax-deductible grants, and material support where needed. Sources of funds are subscriptions, donations and events.
Daniel Eckart is the vice president of the Capoeira Alafia Society.
On request we can offer other net participants advice, give a presentation, and provide up-to-date information and contacts in the field of our work.
