Children’s Fund of Ethiopia (CFE) is a non-profit corporation, erected to help with health issues of Ethiopian children. There is a tremendous lack of adequate healthcare for many Ethiopians, most of whom are children or young adults. Resources are lacking and social improvements are slow. CFE will engage in fundraising activities to raise money for projects that not only help sick kids but also aim to become sustainable, independent programs in Ethiopia, staffed by Ethiopians.
Children's Fund of Ethiopia's mission is to support and promote good health for children in Ethiopia by raising money for projects involved in healing sick kids and improving access to healthcare. We support primarily projects that strive to achieve independence by Ethiopians taking care of their own programs. Through educational programs to improve the quality of care delivered, this goal is achieved. Attention also needs to be directed towards preventative medicine by educating the Ethiopian people. Again, we aim to support those programs implemented by local resident professionals.
CFE’s primary purpose is to provide financial assistance, expertise, and other resources to programs in Ethiopia that take care of children, particularly the poor, with no other resources to obtain medical treatment that is deemed necessary.
Our first project is supporting the Cardiac Centre of Ethiopia. This heart hospital opened in 2009 on the grounds of the Black Lion Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It is a fully operational unit taking care of patients with congenital heart disease and acquired valvular heart disease (almost all rheumatic in origin).
At the heart of this project is the care of children with heart disease, but also an educational component across the country for prevention of acquired heart disease. The CFE is proud to support a project that fulfills precisely the mission of this organization. We also actively participate in actual missions doing the work and education ourselves.
• Coordinating voluntary medical teams coming to Ethiopia to render treatment including cardiac surgery.
• Teaching local staff in their professional area to eventually become independent.
• Increasing public awareness about Rheumatic Heart Disease.
• Acquiring equipment for the diagnosis, surgical management and follow up of cardiac patients.
Dr. Stephen Tahta is the President of the Children’s Fund of Ethiopia (CFE).
